UK Approval of Paramount-WBD Deal Wins Support From European Media Leaders

European film and television industry leaders have welcomed the United Kingdom’s approval of Paramount Skydance’s proposed acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery, calling it a positive step for the future of the global entertainment business.

Following the UK government’s decision to clear the deal with legally binding commitments, several prominent European producers and executives expressed confidence in Paramount Skydance CEO David Ellison’s vision for the combined company. Many said the merger would strengthen the industry, increase investment in content, and create a more competitive global media company.

The UK approved the transaction after Paramount agreed to a series of safeguards, including maintaining the editorial independence of Channel 5 News, preserving public service broadcasting commitments, protecting children’s programming, and continuing investment in UK-produced content. The approval removes one of the final major regulatory hurdles outside the United States.

David Ellison thanked industry partners for their support and reiterated that the merged company aims to invest in creative talent, theatrical releases, and premium storytelling while preserving the identities of major brands across the Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery portfolios.

Despite the regulatory progress in Europe, the proposed merger still faces legal challenges in the United States, where several states have filed antitrust lawsuits seeking to block the transaction. A trial is expected in 2027, meaning the deal cannot be finalized until those legal proceedings are resolved or settled.

If completed, the merger would create one of the world’s largest entertainment companies, bringing together major brands including HBO Max, Warner Bros. Pictures, CNN, CBS, Paramount Pictures, Paramount+, Nickelodeon, and Channel 5 under a single corporate umbrella.
