Target Apologizes and Pulls Children’s Halloween Costume After Backlash

Target has apologized and removed a children’s Halloween costume from sale after widespread backlash over concerns that the product evoked Blackface and racist minstrel imagery.

The costume, called the “Kids’ Glows Under Blacklight Circus Clown Halloween Costume,” sparked criticism online after images of the product circulated on social media. Critics said elements of the design and promotional imagery resembled racist caricatures of Black people.

Target Admits It ‘Got This Wrong’

In an official statement, Target said the costume should never have been included in its Halloween product lineup and confirmed that it was no longer available for sale.

The retailer acknowledged that the product was especially hurtful to its Black customers, employees and partners. Target said it was reviewing how the costume was approved and what changes were needed to prevent a similar incident in the future.

Costume Sparks Social Media Outrage

The costume was sold under Target’s seasonal Hyde and EEK Boutique brand. According to reports, critics objected to features including dark gloves, a hood with an exaggerated smile and the way the product was presented in promotional images.

The controversy quickly spread online, with critics questioning how the costume passed through Target’s internal approval process before reaching consumers.

Controversy Comes After Previous Criticism

The incident adds to a series of recent public-relations challenges for Target. The company has previously faced criticism over its decisions involving diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives, as well as other merchandise controversies.

Some critics have linked the latest backlash to broader concerns about representation and diversity in corporate decision-making, although Target has not publicly identified who designed or approved the costume.

Target has now removed the product and says it is examining its internal processes as it attempts to prevent another similar controversy.
