Palestinian Club Football to Resume in September After Nearly Three-Year Suspension

Palestinian club football is set to return in September after a nearly three-year suspension caused by the war in Gaza, the Palestinian Football Association announced.

Association president Jibril Rajoub said Monday that football activities and the Palestinian league will officially resume on September 4, marking a significant moment for the country’s football community.

Palestinian sports leagues, including professional football, were halted after the war began on October 7, 2023. The prolonged conflict disrupted sporting activities across the Palestinian territories and made regular competition extremely difficult.

The return of domestic football will provide Palestinian clubs and players with an opportunity to compete again after years of disruption. The announcement comes as Palestinian football continues to face challenges involving facilities, travel and access to sporting venues.

The Palestinian Football Association has continued to operate internationally during the suspension, with the national team playing matches outside the Palestinian territories because of the conflict and related travel restrictions.

The restart of the domestic league is expected to be welcomed by players, clubs and supporters who have been unable to experience regular competitive football since 2023.

Rajoub’s announcement represents an important step toward restoring organized sport in Palestine, although conditions remain difficult and the situation could affect the ability of clubs to conduct a full season.
