Lindsey Graham’s Sister Wins GOP Nomination for His Former US Senate Seat

Darline Graham, the sister of late South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham, has won the Republican nomination to seek a full term in the US Senate seat previously held by her brother.

Darline Graham defeated five-term US Representative Ralph Norman in Tuesday’s Republican primary runoff, winning 52.4% of the vote to Norman’s 47.6%, according to results reported by the Associated Press.

Trump-Backed Candidate Wins Republican Primary

Graham’s victory represents another significant win for President Donald Trump, who strongly endorsed her campaign and appeared with her at a rally in South Carolina.

Trump’s political operation also provided substantial financial support. His MAGA Inc. super PAC spent more than $827,000 backing Graham’s campaign, according to federal election filings.

Graham had never previously held elected office before being appointed temporarily to her brother’s Senate seat following his death in July.

From Interim Senator to Senate Candidate

Lindsey Graham died on July 11, 2026, after winning the Republican nomination for another Senate term. His death created a vacancy and forced South Carolina Republicans to select a new candidate for the November election.

Governor Henry McMaster appointed Darline Graham to temporarily serve out the remainder of her brother’s term. She subsequently announced that she would seek a full six-year term.

Her lack of political experience became a major issue during the campaign. Graham acknowledged during a debate that she was not particularly knowledgeable about national security, an area that had been central to her brother’s Senate career.

Darline Graham Will Face Democrat Annie Andrews

Graham will now face Democratic nominee Annie Andrews, a Charleston-area pediatrician, in the November general election.

South Carolina remains a strongly Republican state, making Graham the early favorite in the general election. No Democrat has won a US Senate seat in South Carolina since 1998.

The November race will nevertheless attract national attention because of the unusual circumstances surrounding Graham’s candidacy and Trump’s prominent role in helping her secure the Republican nomination.

A New Chapter for the Graham Senate Seat

Lindsey Graham represented South Carolina in the Senate for more than two decades and became one of the Republican Party’s most recognizable voices on foreign policy and national security.

His sister now has the opportunity to turn the temporary appointment she received after his death into a full six-year Senate term. Her victory also demonstrates the continued influence of Trump’s endorsement among Republican voters in South Carolina.
