Powerful Storm Hits Toronto, Leaving Tens of Thousands Without Power

A powerful thunderstorm has battered Toronto, Canada, bringing torrential rain, strong winds and large hail that damaged buildings, flooded roads and left tens of thousands of residents without electricity.

The storm struck on Wednesday, prompting tornado watches and warnings in parts of the region as emergency crews responded to widespread flooding, fallen trees and downed power lines.

At Least 45,000 Without Electricity

Toronto Hydro said at least 45,000 customers were without power as of 8pm Wednesday.

The storm brought down trees and power lines across the city, while flooding forced authorities to close several roads, including parts of the Don Valley Parkway.

Severe Flooding Disrupts Toronto

Heavy rainfall caused significant flooding across Toronto and surrounding communities.

The Don Valley Parkway was among the areas affected, with vehicles becoming stranded in floodwater. Images from the nearby city of Vaughan showed cars nearly submerged after the storm.

The flooding also affected Michael Garron Hospital in Toronto’s East York community, where the emergency department was impacted by rising water.

Toronto Emergency Operations Centre Activated

Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow said the city’s emergency operations centre had been activated as crews dealt with the damage.

City workers were deployed to respond to fallen trees, downed power wires and flooding. Toronto’s transit system was also working to restore services affected by flooding and debris carried by strong winds.

Flights Delayed and Cancelled

The storm also disrupted air travel at Toronto Pearson International Airport.

Dozens of flights scheduled to depart Wednesday evening were delayed or cancelled as severe weather affected the region.

Canada’s weather agency later lifted an orange warning for severe thunderstorms across the Greater Toronto Area, although a yellow alert covering heat and severe thunderstorms remained in effect for parts of southwestern Ontario.

Cleanup and Recovery Underway

Emergency and city crews are continuing to clear fallen trees, debris and damaged infrastructure while utility workers work to restore electricity.

Residents are being urged to remain cautious around flooded roads, downed power lines and other storm-related hazards as cleanup operations continue.

The storm demonstrates how quickly severe thunderstorms can disrupt a major metropolitan area, affecting transportation, hospitals, electricity supplies and daily life across the region.
