Lise Klaveness and Laura McAllister Emerged as Key Voices in UEFA’s Stand Against FIFA

Two of European football’s most influential female leaders, Lise Klaveness and Laura McAllister, played central roles in UEFA’s opposition to FIFA’s controversial proposal to sell a stake in the FIFA World Cup to private investors.

According to reports, Laura McAllister, UEFA vice president and former Wales international, was among the first officials to call for strong action during an emergency UEFA meeting, including discussing a potential boycott of FIFA competitions if the proposal moved forward. Lise Klaveness, president of the Norwegian Football Federation, also pushed for stronger governance standards and greater accountability within FIFA.

The proposed plan, championed by FIFA President Gianni Infantino, would have created a new commercial entity and offered a minority stake in World Cup-related revenues to private investors. The idea sparked widespread opposition from UEFA and many national football associations, who argued that football’s premier tournament should remain under democratic control rather than outside financial interests.

Klaveness described the proposal as a serious governance issue and warned it risked undermining trust in FIFA’s leadership. She praised UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin for taking a firm stance during the dispute and emphasized that football should continue to be governed by its member associations rather than commercial investors.

Following intense backlash, FIFA abandoned the proposal. The controversy has intensified scrutiny of Infantino’s leadership, with UEFA publicly declaring that it has lost confidence in the FIFA president after the failed plan.

The episode has also highlighted the growing influence of women in football governance, with Klaveness and McAllister emerging as leading voices in one of the sport’s most significant governance debates in recent years.
